The Indonesia Council will be holding its fifth Open Conference on 15-17 July 2009, immediately after the ASILE conference, also to be held in Sydney.
The ICOC is a multi-disciplinary conference which provides a forum for the presentation of new and innovative work on Indonesia with particular emphasis on encouraging engagement between newer Indonesianists and established scholars. It attracts participants from all over Australia and many other parts of the world.
There is no registration fee for the conference.
The Indonesia Council Open Conference has no funding available to assist participants. Please consult with your university to find out what funding options are available. Once you have registered for the conference we can provide you with a letter of confirmation that may assist you in securing funding.The Indonesia Council now invites proposals for papers and panels. Papers will be presented in plenary and concurrent panel sessions of three papers with a discussant. Proposals for papers should include a title and an abstract of 150 words as well as a bionote of 100 words. Proposals for panels should include either a suggested panel title only or the titles and abstracts of three papers of 20 minutes duration. Proposals for panels or a series of several panels are strongly encouraged.
The submission date for panel and paper proposals is Friday 27 February 2009.

The conference will be held in and around the Brennan Building at the University of Sydney. The Brennan Building is located on Manning Road (grid reference F14 on this map).
Cheap airfares to Sydney are often available. The Camperdown campus is a 20-minute taxi-ride from the Kingsford Smith airport. Airlines servicing Sydney include:

CountryLink trains and major bus companies operate services to Sydney from a number of other centres.
Participants and speakers must arrange their own accommodation for the duration of the conference. Sydney has a range of hotels, motels and budget accommodation. It is best to stay in the City, Glebe or Newtown area and walk or catch public transport to the University of Sydney’s Camperdown campus. The campus is walking distance from Sydney’s Central Station, Glebe and Newtown. For a detailed map of which busses travel past the Camperdown campus please visit Sydney Buses . The nearest train station is Redfern Train Station.
Parking is difficult and expensive on the Camperdown campus. Please consider using public transport.
