Background Information

Following the success of the 2001, 2003 and 2005 Open Conferences, the Indonesia Council will hold its fourth Open Conference in Melbourne on 24-25 September 2007. The ICOC is multi-disciplinary conference which provides a forum for the presentation of new and innovative work on Indonesia, with particular emphasis on encouraging engagement between newer Indonesianists and established scholars. The 2007 conference will be hosted by the Indonesian Studies Program, Monash University with the support of The Centre for Southeast Asian Studies, Monash Asia Institute, Inside Indonesia, and the Caulfield Campus of Monash University.

There will be no registration fee for the conference.

Conference Highlights

There are a number of highlights in the conference program:

Call for Papers and Panels

The Indonesia Council now invites proposals for papers and panels. Papers will be presented in plenary and concurrent panel sessions of three papers with a discussant. Proposals for papers should include a title and an abstract of 150 words as well as biodata of 100 words. Papers should be no more than 20 minutes duration (equivalent to 2000 words). Proposals for panels should include either a suggested panel title only or the titles and abstracts of three papers of 20 minutes duration. Proposals for panels may also include a suggested discussant.

The submission date for panel and paper proposals has been extended to 15 May 2007.

How to Register

To register for the conference please send an email with your name, institutional affiliation and email address to ICOC@arts.monash.edu.au by Monday 3 September 2007.

Please indicate if you DO NOT want your name, institution and email address published in the conference program.

Venue

The conference will be held in Building H, Caulfield Campus. The registration desk will be located in the entrance to Exhibition area on the Ground Floor of Building H (H1.16)

Building H is located in the north-east of the campus and faces onto Dandenong Road (Princes Highway)

Getting There

Qantas

Cheap airfares to Melbourne are often available from Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide. Melbourne is located approximately 8 hours drive from Canberra. Major bus companies operate services to Melbourne from a number of other capital cities.

Accommodation

Participants and speakers are asked to arrange their own accommodation for the duration of the conference. Melbourne has a range of hotels, motels and budget accommodation. It is best to stay in the City or the St Kilda area and catch public transport to the Caulfield Campus. Information about accommodation is available from Tourism Victoria. Public Transport

Information about public transport in Melbourne is available from Metlink. The Caulfield Campus is approximately 9 kilometres from Melbourne's city centre and 6 kilometres from St Kilda. It is located next to Caulfield Train Station and is also accessible by the No. 3 tram from Swanston Street in the City. From St Kilda, the No. 3 tram can be caught from Stop 35 (Carlise St and Brighton Road intersection).
